Flower Care
THE FIORITA FLOWER CARE GUIDE
A little care goes a long way.
Your Fiorita Atelier flowers have been carefully selected, conditioned and arranged to arrive looking beautiful.
With a little care at home, you can help your flowers stay fresh, hydrated and elegant for as long as possible.
Because every arrangement is made with seasonal flowers, the exact care required can vary slightly from stem to stem. Below is our guide to caring for some of the most beautiful varieties you may find in a Fiorita arrangement.
YOUR FLOWERS HAVE ARRIVED
01 — Give them a drink
If your flowers arrive arranged in a vase, check the water level as soon as possible and top it up with fresh water if needed.
If your flowers arrive wrapped, place them into a clean vase filled with fresh water as soon as possible.
Flowers are living materials and begin to lose water as soon as they are cut, so getting them into water promptly is one of the most important things you can do.
02 — Keep the water clean
Clean water is essential.
Check your arrangement every day or two and top up when necessary.
If the water becomes cloudy, change it completely and rinse the vase before refilling it.
For the best results, completely change the water every few days and re-cut the stems slightly at the same time.
Always use a clean vase. Bacteria can build up in dirty water and interfere with a flower's ability to take up water.
03 — Keep foliage out of the water
Remove any leaves or foliage sitting below the waterline.
Submerged foliage can deteriorate in the water and contribute to bacterial growth.
04 — Re-cut the stems
When refreshing your flowers, use clean, sharp scissors or floral snips to remove a small amount from the bottom of each stem.
A clean cut helps maintain good water uptake.
Avoid crushing or hammering the stems — this can damage the tissue and isn't generally necessary.
05 — Find the right spot
Choose somewhere cool and away from:
- Direct sunlight
- Radiators
- Fires
- Heaters
- Strong draughts
- Very warm rooms
Keeping flowers away from heat will generally help them last longer.
And one often-overlooked tip: keep your flowers away from bowls of ripening fruit. Fruit releases ethylene gas, which can cause flowers to age more quickly.
FLOWER-SPECIFIC CARE
Not every flower behaves in the same way. Some varieties continue to open beautifully after arriving, while others naturally move quickly through their flowering cycle.
🌹 ROSES
Roses are one of the most rewarding flowers to watch open.
To help your roses thrive:
- Keep the vase topped up with clean water.
- Re-cut the stems when refreshing the water.
- Remove any foliage sitting below the waterline.
- Keep them somewhere cool and away from direct heat.
- Remove individual petals or blooms once they begin to fade.
A note about rose heads
Don't worry if your roses arrive slightly closed.
Many roses are intentionally delivered before they are fully open so that you can enjoy the process of watching them unfurl.
Some varieties may open dramatically over several days.
🌷 TULIPS
Tulips are wonderfully distinctive because they continue to grow and move after being cut.
It is completely normal for tulip stems to lengthen, curve and lean towards the light.
To care for tulips:
- Keep them in a clean vase with fresh water.
- Check their water frequently — tulips are thirsty flowers.
- Keep them away from strong heat and direct sunlight.
- Don't be concerned if the stems begin to bend or move.
- Rotate the vase occasionally if you want a more even display.
If tulips arrive looking a little bent, they can often be helped by wrapping the stems loosely in paper and standing them in deep water in a cool place for a couple of hours.
Let them move.
Their natural movement is part of their charm.
🌸 HYDRANGEAS
Hydrangeas have beautiful, generous flower heads but can be particularly sensitive to dehydration.
To help your hydrangeas last:
- Keep them well hydrated.
- Check the water level frequently.
- Keep them away from heat and direct sunlight.
- Refresh the water regularly.
- Re-cut the stem if the flower head begins to droop.
Hydrangeas can last particularly well when cut at the right stage, with fully open heads generally performing well as cut flowers.
If your hydrangea begins to droop
Don't immediately assume it has reached the end of its life.
First check the water level and refresh the water.
A fresh stem cut and clean water can sometimes help a dehydrated hydrangea recover.
🌼 DAFFODILS
Daffodils are beautiful spring flowers with one important consideration: their sap can affect other flowers.
When freshly cut, daffodil stems release sap into the water.
Our recommendation:
If you receive an arrangement containing daffodils alongside other flowers, follow the care instructions provided with your arrangement.
If conditioning fresh daffodils separately, allow them to condition in their own water before combining them with other varieties.
Daffodils can be particularly valuable as seasonal statement flowers, so enjoy them while they are in season.
🌺 PEONIES
Peonies are one of our favourite flowers to watch develop.
They are often delivered when the buds are still relatively tight and can gradually open into large, romantic blooms.
To care for peonies:
- Keep the water fresh.
- Give the stems plenty of room.
- Keep them somewhere cool.
- Avoid placing them next to radiators or in direct sunlight.
- Remove fading blooms to keep the arrangement looking fresh.
Don't be concerned if a peony arrives as a small, firm bud.
The transformation is part of the experience.
🌻 SUNFLOWERS
Sunflowers are naturally thirsty and have substantial flower heads.
To keep them looking their best:
- Keep plenty of fresh water in the vase.
- Check the water regularly.
- Remove any leaves below the waterline.
- Keep them away from excessive heat.
- Re-cut the stems when refreshing the water.
Their large heads may naturally cause the stems to lean slightly over time — this is perfectly normal.
🌿 EUCALYPTUS & FOLIAGE
Foliage can often last longer than the flowers themselves.
For foliage such as eucalyptus:
- Keep stems in clean water where they are part of a fresh arrangement.
- Remove any leaves below the waterline.
- Keep the arrangement away from extreme heat.
- Remove individual leaves as they begin to deteriorate.
Some foliage may naturally dry beautifully. If your eucalyptus begins to dry while still looking attractive, you can allow it to transition into a dried element rather than immediately discarding it.
A FEW GOLDEN RULES
DO
✓ Use a clean vase
✓ Use fresh water
✓ Keep the water level topped up
✓ Remove submerged foliage
✓ Re-cut stems when refreshing the water
✓ Keep flowers somewhere cool
✓ Remove fading flowers and foliage
✓ Enjoy the natural movement and opening of your flowers
DON'T
✕ Place flowers directly beside a radiator
✕ Leave them in strong direct sunlight
✕ Allow the vase water to become stagnant
✕ Leave leaves submerged in water
✕ Place flowers directly beside ripening fruit
✕ Crush or hammer flower stems
✕ Expect every flower variety to behave in exactly the same way
WHEN A FLOWER BEGINS TO FADE
A flower beginning to fade doesn't mean your entire arrangement has reached the end of its life.
Remove individual flowers as they finish and continue caring for the remaining stems.
Some flowers may last considerably longer than others. This is a natural part of using fresh, seasonal flowers.
As your arrangement evolves, you may find that the composition changes shape — and that's part of the beauty of working with natural flowers.
HOW LONG WILL MY FLOWERS LAST?
There is no single lifespan that applies to every flower.
Vase life depends on the variety of flower, its stage of opening when cut, the temperature of the room, water quality and how the arrangement is cared for.
Some flowers may remain beautiful for many days, while more delicate varieties naturally have a shorter vase life.
Rather than expecting every stem to last the same length of time, enjoy the arrangement as it changes and opens.
THE FIORITA APPROACH
We believe flowers should feel alive.
They may open, move, bend, change colour and gradually soften as the days pass.
These changes aren't imperfections — they're part of the natural character of fresh flowers.
Your Fiorita arrangement has been designed to evolve.
Take a moment to enjoy it.
